Thanks for the comment, Fran!

I'm hoping that instead of it becoming "just another major blatant advertising extravaganza," that we learn how to use it. If I'm not following someone, they can't pitch me. If I follow someone who pitches me too much, then I "unfollow" them. The point is that we are in control of our own channels.

Don't give up hope!

If someone I don't know follows me on twitter I will go and check out their tweets and profile before I consider following them. Lately I have had a few blatant spam tweeple follow me and that is annoying!
Soon enough twitter will be just another major blatant advertising extravaganza, thus losing it's delight. Shame.

Thanks, Janice. I think we are all trying to figure out how we use each of these tools.

And Harry. Perhaps 7:4 is the magic number!

Here's what I do when someone follows me (from a professional perspective):

1) If I know him and respect him, I'll follow him.
2) If I don't know him, then I'll go to his Twitter page and look at what he is tweeting. If it's the kind of content I want to receive, I'll follow him. If it's mostly update on his laundry and what he's eating for breakfast, then I won't.

Like you, I can't keep up with more than a certain amount of data. If I have too much to look at, then I might miss something important among all the junk tweets.

FYI ... I have 49 followers and I'm following 28 people. So I have the same 7:4 ratio as you do!

You bring an interesting perspective to the social media "friending/following" concept. In general I follow people on twitter who I know or perhaps I recognize their login or web site. On another network I practice reciprocal friending and I realized that I don't bother to look at status updates there. As I think more about it, the difference in behavior is due to a fundamental difference in how I use the networks. The network where I have better social karma is targeted to my side interest and as such it is a marketing channel for me. There, more friends means a wider reach. But I can't keep up with status updates there so I don't even try.
